FC Goa hero Romeo Fernandes is pretty disappointed that he is parting ways with the Gaurs. For the first three seasons of Indian Super League, the right winger had been an integral part of the Goan franchise who finished runners-up in 2015 and made it to the semi-finals in the inaugural season.
The Goan star has been picked up by Delhi Dynamos FC for the upcoming fourth season of the now expanded 10-team league. However, Romeo said he felt a tinge of grief that he won't be wearing the blue jersey of the Goan team and continue his successful partnership with Mandar Rao Dessai.
"I will miss Mandar... from a personal point of view. We shared a good rapport and were friends both on and off the field. Over the last three seasons, we developed a perfect understanding. It's sad that I won't be there this time," Romeo told The Goan.
Talking about ISL in general, the wiry winger said that what has impressed him the most in the tournament is the mode of operation of the support staff of the franchises. "The head coach, assistant coaches, physios in ISL are very efficient. The way they go about their job and the equipment they use are the latest ones, something that clubs here should learn from. It will only help football improve further," he opined.
Asked if he will have an extra responsibility at the Dynamos, Romeo said: "Always... there has been responsibility. Here (in Goa) there were a lot of expectations. I am not new to it."
Romeo now has shifted focus on his new assignment and is committed to do his best for his new new Delhi-based franchise. "That's what I am focussing on at present (winning the title with Delhi). My fans have helped in my journey, and the coaches trusted me. Even when I am not scoring goals, they believe in me. When I played for FC Goa, many youngsters came to see me. They also watch me on television as I am their favourite. I am very active on social media and love to connect with my fans," he said.
The creative midfielder primarily plays as a right-winger, seamlessly ready to cut in and attack. Always a fan favourite, his conspicuous absence from the FC Goa team this time was a surprise to many. However, the talented midfielder is now looking ahead, targeting a successful stint in the glitzy league.
"I have played mostly as a right half for FC Goa, Dempo and East Bengal. I am focussing on scoring more goals and improving my agility," Romeo stated.
