Goa's vehicular density threatens to be highest in country

The vehicular population of Goa has increased by over a lakh since the last year with the vehicular density presently pegged at 858, almost certainly the highest in the country.

The latest figures available with the Union Ministry of Road Transport (2014-15) released towards the end of 2016 placed Goa at the top of the national list for vehicular density, which refers to the number of vehicles per 1,000 people.
In 2014-15, Goa's vehicular density stood at 551, followed closely by Pudducherry (488) and Delhi (424).
Goa government has now disclosed that the vehicular population, as on May 31, 2017, stands at 12,50,969. The figure was placed in the public domain by Transport Minister Ramakrishna Sudin Dhavalikar in response to a question tabled by Margao MLA Digambar Kamat.
Goa's population has been pegged at 14,58,545 in census 2011. It is, therefore, only a matter of time till these figures tally to one vehicle per Goan.
Of the total vehicles registered in Goa, 90 per cent are non-commercial vehicles. Two-wheelers account to the largest chunk of the vehicles at whooping 68 per cent, followed closely by private cars and jeeps at 20 per cent.


578 fatalities on roads since 2015
PANAJI: In reply to a question tabled by Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco, Home Minister Manohar Parrikar informed that a total of 578 persons have perished in road accidents since 2015, with the annual fatalities steadying at 232. From January till June this year, 117 persons have lost their lives in road accidents. Since, 2015 till June 2017, traffic police have forwarded around 600 driving licenses for suspension or cancellation to the concerned Assistant Director of Transport.
