Cops take guard before Bamonbudo to ensure spot remains alcohol -free

Monsoon time is known to resurrect seasonal waterfalls in the eco-rich Western ghats. The easily-accessible Bamonbudo waterfall in remote Gaondongrim village is the most patronised and the most abused by unruly picknickers, who flock to the scenic spot with food and liquor.

the goan I networkrCANACONA rr Canacona police have set up a barricade and placed its personnel at Tudal, half-a-kilometre before the waterfall, to ensure no alcohol is sneaked into the place. Says former village sarpanch Rajendra Gaonkar, “Because of consumption of alcohol, eve-teasing of our women, breaking of glass bottles at Banombudo created an unwanted atmosphere in our village.” Ever since the waterfall became known to the outside world, people from even far and wide have started flocking to the place. Last year, residents bitterly complained about thrash, especially broken glass pieces and garbage at the spot. rSince the waterfall lies just off a narrow road, parking space crunch often led to fights between visitors.rVillage representatives have been demanding police presence to control or ban trouble makers disturbing peace in the village. For the last two years policemen were posted at the waterfall itself, but even this brought no relief from visitors, who paid little heed to the presence of men-in-khaki. rThis year, cops have been placed 500 metres before the waterfall to ensure no alcohol goes through. Residents inform there has been no trouble so far and picnickers to the waterfall also have been minimal.
