Canconkars stage rally to condemn vandalisms

Hundreds of citizens from Canacona on Friday staged a ‘peace and solidarity’ rally to create awareness on ills of desecrating the religious places.

The rally started from KTC bus stand and wended its way through Chaudi crossing St Thereza of Jesus Church, old bus stand, State Bank, post office, Shri Gaitonde ground and culminated at the Deputy Collector complex. rLater, some citizens submitted a memorandum to Deputy Collector Kedar Naik in his cabin, requesting to enhance protection of all the shrines/religious places from the anti-social elements who are out to disturb communal harmony and peace. r“The unabated incidents of desecration of holy structures taking place even today is not a good sign in the society we live in, as the constitution guarantees every religious community has equal rights to practice their faith and live peacefully,” the deputy collector was told. rSome citizens carried placards with messages ‘Citizens of Canacona condemn desecration of religious places in Goa’, ‘The purpose of religion is to control yourself, not to criticize others’, ‘If your religion doesn’t respect the rights of other religions, it is lacking something’, ‘Respect all rreligions’, etc. rThe deputy collector was specifically requested to increase patrolling near religious places all over the taluka, in view of repeated incidents of desecration of holy places elsewhere in the State, informed the Anil Bhagat, a participant.
