Bunking classes has become virtually impossible at the Ponda Education Society’s Shri Ravi S Naik Higher Secondary School at Farmagudi, with attendance at every period being made mandatory.
In a bid to enforce discipline and academic etiquette in the school premises, the school authorities have also decided to clamp down on fancy hairstyles among students.
The decision has been welcomed by the teaching staff and parents alike, with many of them hailing the school’s move to bring about greater discipline among students.
“Ever since the new academic year has begun, this institute has begun recording the attendance of students at every period. Teachers note down if any student is absent and those students found absent from class on three consecutive days are asked to submit a note from their parents or guardians,” Principal Vishwas Raikar told The Goan.
“The parents/guardians need to justify the absence of their children/wards. If students are found absent for ten days, the parents/guardians are called to the office,” he added.
According to school sources, teachers keep a close watch on notes submitted by students as some have been involved in forging sick notes.
Speaking to The Goan, a teacher on condition of anonymity said the staff has taken this exercise very seriously.
“This system helps the student community to score well in exams. Unless there is valid reason, students cannot remain absent. It is good for them and for the institution.”
“Even if students want to leave for home early, they have to specify the reason in our office register,” the teacher said.
Besides insisting on attendance, the school has also informed students that they should have appropriate hairstyles in the school.
“During the admission period, students with fancy hairstyles were sent to hair salons to cut their hair and return with a decent hairstyle,” another source said.
A parent, Ramdas Naik, said many parents like him were happy with the new system.
“I am happy about the strict attendance system by this institute. Parents will now be at peace, knowing that students will not bunk classes even if they wish to do so,” said Naik.
