In several complaints filed before the authorities, farmers have pointed out that wastewater and sewage is entering the fields “causing a lot of health hazards and a nuisance in the area.”
In her complaint Socorrina Fernandes, a farmer from Caranzalem pointed out that the practice has been on for several weeks now, with no end in sight.
However, the farmers and the villagers have been made to run from pillar to post with the health authorities asking them to contact the panchayat and the panchayat refusing to act in the matter.
Several buildings in the area were connected to the sewerage network, but are not using the facility and instead allowing the sewage to overflow into the fields rendering them uncultivable.
The farmers have pointed out that they are losing out on cultivating their fields as the monsoons have already begun and they are not able to plough their fields due to the nuisance of the sewage flowing into them. They have called on the authorities to look into this issue at the earliest and seek out a solution so that their livelihood is
not threatened.
They hope the issue will be solved before the sowing season is washed off.
