“The whole council is united in the decision to clear the footpaths in the market. We will not tolerate any encroachments. The passages should be free for people to walk and shop,” said Kavlekar.
While undertaking the clearance drive, he said the civic body would not come under any pressure, however, influential the individual be.
He said the anti-encroachment drive was long overdue, even as most of the footpaths remained congested with goods displayed by the shopkeepers and at times, by vendors.
Meanwhile, civic officials continued with their anti-encroachment drive for the third day running and cleared encroachments from the main entrance in the Mapusa market.
Most of the tables of the lottery sellers and other vendors who were illegally occupying the space were seized by the civic officials. Sources informed that some of these vendors were rehabilitated and allotted shop space some years back.
