Bardez win Driver’s Cup

Bardez Veterans shunted out Danvodem Veterans 5-4 via tie-breaker to clinch the 2nd All Goa Driver’s Cup veterans football tournament organized by Chinchinim Pickup and Rickshaw Drivers at Church grounds, Chinchinim on Saturday. Both the teams were tied 1-1 at the end of regulation time.

Bardez Veterans’ attack in the first half was sporadic and nearly found the mark in the 10th minute when former India captain Bruno Coutinho whose desperate attempt from outside the rival penalty box missed the target narrowly. At the other end, Danvodem Veterans had a chance when former Dempo striker Marcus Carvalho made a solo run inside the rival penalty box but it was foiled by a rival defender. Soonafter, Marcus Carvalho had a chance to surge ahead but he shot wide from close range in the 34th minute. The deadlock was broken after change of ends when Bruno Coutinho unleashed a well executed free-kick which eluded rival goalkeeper. With time running out, Marcus Carvalho  struck the equalizer giving no chance to the rival goalkeeper. Stung by that setback, Bardez Veterans went all out in search of the match-winner when Bruno Coutinho twice missed out.
In the ensuing penalty shoot-out, Bruno Coutinho, Atul Naik, Lourenco Quadros and Narendra Gad were on target for Bardez Veterans while Rafik, Bepari and Francis scored for Danvondem Veterans. 
Bardez Veterans were richer by Rs 30,000 and took home a glittering trophy while Danvondem Veterans had to settle for Rs 20,000 and a trophy. Ulhas Dessai, President of Cuncolim pickup stand was the chief guest and gave away the prizes to winners and runners-up in the presence of well known Konkani stage comedian Jesus and other dignatries and others. President Rosario Dias welcomed the guests,  Satish Chari introduced the players to the guests and Rito Rebello, treasurer proposed the vote of thanks.
