Salgaocar win big; Paroda, Goa Velha draw in GFA First Division League

Salgaocar FC routed Holy Cross Sports Club, Arambol 6-1 in the GFA’S First Divison league at Government Village School play ground, Ambelim on Friday.The highlight of the day was a brace each from striker Liston Colaco and Jaison Barbosa.

Salgaocar  showed better coordination and unsettled their rivals. The Green brigade sounded warning soon after the kick off when in-from striker Liston Colaco picked up the ball from midfielder Lalit Seriad and the former’s terrific shot kissed the post in the very 3rd minute. 
Salgaocar were unlucky when Lalit  Seriad’s rasping shot hit the cross bar and went out. But Salgaocar  were not denied for long when Liston’s well executed free kick eluded the rival goalkeeper and human wall to put his team in front in the 7th minute. Three minutes later, Jaison Barbosa doubled the lead. In the 15th minute, striker Liston  inflated the lead with a stiff shot that crashed into the net to record his brace. Down by 0-3 ,Holy Cross  Club tried their best to come back into the game but their rival defenders were stubborn at the back. After the break, Salgaocar slackened their pace and allowed their opponents to manoeuvre inside their territory. Dalesh Pednekar scored the consolation goal for Arambol side in the 51st minute. Unfazed, Salgaocar went into attacking mode and were not to be denied for long when Ronaldo Olveria put the issue beyond doubt  in the 65th minute.Thereafter Salgaocar carried too many guns against Arambol side. Denil Rebello added his name to the scorers’ list to give his team a 5-1 cushion in the 79th minute. In the 80th minute, Jaison Barbosa drove the last nail into rival’s coffin to register his brace. In another match,Immaculate Conception Sports Club (ICSC), Paroda produced a come back to secure a 1-1 draw with Goa Velha Sports Club at Government Village School play grounds, Cuncolim on Friday. Paroda were trailing 0-1 at the break. Needing a win to kept their hopes alive to avoid the relegation, Goa Velha started the game in right earnest and troubled the rival defence with well orchestrated raids. At the other end, Paroda were off colour and looked jaded as they failed to functioned as unit. Goa Velha had a couple of gilt-edged opportunities and came close to breaking the deadlock  but striker Nestor Dias’ desperate attempt from inside the box went over the bar. Couple of minutes later, Goa Velha  had a chance to surge ahead  in the 25th minute when Nestor Dias’ valiant header was well collected by Paroda goalkeeper Presley  Mascarenhas off a well measured lob from Nikesh Mangueshkar.The deadlock was broken in the 33rd minute when Nestor Dias who was in the thick of action punished the rival goalkeeper Presley Mascarenhas off Fintan D’Costa. 
The goal boosted the morale of Goa Velha lads as they mounted tremendous pressure on the rival citadel and nearly doubled the lead in the 40th minute when Nestor unleashed a shot and rival goalkeeper Presley Mascarenhas came to his side’s rescue and parried the rebound.  Post resumption, Goa Velha continued to enjoy  better ball possession and unleashed a barrage of attacks but their forwards were guilty of misfiring from hand shaking distance. Paroda team who were receiving at the first half had a chance to level the score but Mariano Rebello’s well executed free kick was  blocked by Paroda goalkeeper. 
Just when it seemed  that  Paroda would be consigned to a defeat, midfielder Mariano Rebello spared them the blushes with a thumping header at the stroke of final whistle.
