Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (GBSHSE) registered a record pass percentage of 91.57 at the Secondary Schools Certificate (SSC) Examination, with girls outperforming boys this year too.
Of the 18,776 students who appeared for the examination, 17,193 passed with a total pass
percentage of 91.57 per cent. In all, 9,173 boys answered the examination, of which 8,364 passed with a pass percentage of 91.18 per cent. Nonetheless, 9,603 girls had appeared for the examination of which 8,829 passed with a total pass percentage of 91.94 per cent.
The examination was conducted from April 1 to 21 at 27 centres across the State. This year, the Board had introduced a new centre at Mashem, Poinguinim to cater to the students of remote areas  of Canacona.
In all, 174 schools secured pass percentage of 95 per cent and above, of which 94 schools have managed to secure 100 per cent result. Interestingly, 20 government high schools have managed to secure 100 per cent pass percentage.
Speaking at the press conference, GBSHSE chairman J R Rebello said, “Since the last five years, the pass percentage at SSC has been improving and last year for the first time it crossed 90 per cent and this year it has increased further. There are various factors which contribute to the high pass  percentage which include schemes like National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF), Children with Special Needs (CWSN) and sports merit marks.”
“We had a total of 184 students who answered with different concessions under the scheme for  CWSN, of which 161 have passed the examination. There are four special schools of which two are run by Lokvishwas Pratishthan. These students are from special as well as general schools who answer under the scheme of inclusive education. The Board provides them with different concessions,” explained Rebello.
Additionally, NSQF has contributed to the pass percentage. In all 1,782 students had appeared for various subjects under NSQF, of which 202 have passed with the benefit of the scheme. These   courses under NSQF were introduced as a seventh subject from 2014-15 onwards exclusively in   government schools. The Board had provided them with concession to pass in any of the six subjects. Presently, the scheme runs in 78 government schools across the State.
“The 202 students who have passed due to NSQF would have otherwise failed the exam. The  increased pass percentage is partly due to this factor,” he said.
Nonetheless, more than half the students who answered the examination have availed of the sports merit marks.
“Nearly 8,246 have availed of the sports merit marks.
