Curchorem Cacora Municipal Council (CCMC) Chief Officer Pramod Dessai has assured to make proper sitting arrangements for the street vendors, but the street vendors want all the vendors sitting across the town to be brought in the GSUDA market shed.
On Thursday at about 5 pm, Dessai along with the municipal inspector and his team conducted an inspection of the GSUDA market and street vendors shed near KTC bus stand.
During the inspection, Dessai tried to convince the street vendors sitting outside the shed to use the space in the shed. The chief officer also assured the street vendors of making sitting arrangement within 15 days.
When asked the few street vendors why they sit outside when they have a special shed, a lady street vendor who sells fruits said: “We are paying Sopo tax to the CCMC, but the other street vendors selling goods on footpaths and other places in the town are untouched.”
“If CCMC is planning to put things in perspective, then all the street vendors should be brought under GSUDA market,” she said.
A youth, who sell coconuts, on condition of anonymity said: “If we go inside the street vendors shed, then the existing space outside the vendors shed will be utilised as a parking space and it bring down our visibility from far and it will adversely affect our business.”
“We pay Sopo tax and do business by abiding the rules, but are being taken to task and the ones who run business without paying heed to rules and regulations are not being questioned.” said the youth.
Another vegetable vendor said: “We want all the street vendors to be brought
in the GSUDA market shed otherwise it is unjust to impose rules on us and leave others who don’t follow them at all.”
He said five street lamps outside the GSUDA market shed are not functioning since many months and no repairs have been taken up by the CCMC.
