Aiming at accommodating all students who have passed the Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC) Examination, Goa University has resolved to permit all colleges to admit 10 per cent additional seats per division.
The decision was taken at the meeting of Goa University’s Academic Council held on Monday. The official communication to the principals of all colleges is expected to be issued on Tuesday.
In addition to the 10 per cent increase in seats per class, the colleges interested in opening another division will be granted permission subject to the approval of the State government. However, the colleges which get approval to start an additional division will not be allowed to admit 10 per cent additional students per class.
Speaking to The Goan Everyday, a GU official, who was present at the meeting, said, “Compared to last year, over a thousand additional students have passed HSSC. Considering this scenario, the Academic Council has decided to grant a blanket approval to all the colleges to admit 10 per cent additional students per class. These include colleges offering courses like BSc, BCom, BA, BBA and BCA, among others.”
“Secondly, though we have decided to permit additional 10 per cent students per class, this rule will not be applicable to colleges which are allowed to open new divisions. Nonetheless, opening of new divisions will be subject to No Objection Certificate (NoC) from the State government,” he said.
With this decision, colleges will not have to apply individually for permitting additional students per class and can admit additional students directly.
“The decision has been taken in the interest of the students. Nonetheless, if any student is left out or denied admission, he can approach the University and we will try and accommodate him wherever possible,” he said.
As soon as the process for admissions began after HSSC results were announced, several colleges including Rosary College of Commerce and Arts, Navelim; Sridora Caculo College of Commerce and Economics, Mapusa; Narayan Zantye College of Commerce, Bicholim, sent in their applications to GU to permit additional 10 per cent students. Three other colleges had applied for permission to start another division too.
However, in a first, Government College of Commerce, Borda, Margao, has asked for opening an additional division. Presently, there are 21 colleges offering BCom, nine offering BSc, 12 offering BA, and seven each offering BBA and BCA. In all there are 2040 seats for BA program, 3720 for BCom and 1020 seats for BSc.
