According to an order issued by Additional District Magistrate Johnson Bedy Fernandes, the NH-17 will be closed for undertaking the repairs of cross drainage at a sharp curve on Mashem road from 10 pm on May 23 to 2 am May 24.
The order further stated that the cross drainage has been inspected and found to be totally blocked, raising fears of flooding the highway and the locality in the rains.
The issue was also discussed in a meeting of the disaster management convened by Canacona MLA Isidore Fernandes, after which the inspection was conducted which found the drainage completely blocked and in need of urgent repairs.
The office of the District Magistrate also obtained a report from DySP (Traffic) on highway traffic matters and advised to temporarily divert highway traffic, put up display boards and signages to inform the public in advance to avoid inconvenience during the four hours closure period.
Assistant Director of Transport is also asked to stop the heavy traffic at Polem (entering the State from Karnataka) and Gulem (proceeding towards Loliem-Polem) during the said period.
Canacona Police including traffic are also asked to regulate the traffic and to meet any law and order issues.
