Set up over a year ago, MMC’s traffic & road safety body ‘governs’ without nod

That the Civic body failed to move with alacrity to introduce pay parking or repair the defunct CCTV surveillance cameras is an open secret.
What, however, went unnoticed was the civic body’s indifference to notify a statutory traffic and road safety committee constituted over a year ago. It has come to light that though the municipality had inducted a host of officials and citizens on the panel, the Committee was never placed before the
Council for approval.
When the media sought to know from Chief officer Y B Tawde over the fate of the statutory traffic and road safety committee constituted by the Civic body a year ago, he said the decision to constitute the committee was never placed before the Council. “Yes, we had constituted the panel, but the technical section did not do the follow up by placing the same at the Council meeting,” Tawde said, while stressing on the need to revive the panel.
Though caught on the wrong foot, what’s interesting to note is the fact that the Chief Officer was
audacious to state that though the administration has failed to place the matter before the Council for
approval, the committee had been functioning even without the Council nod. “Designated officers
including RTO, Traffic PI have been interacting with the civic body time and again and had been seeking help and assistance from the Civic body to streamline the city traffic”, Tawde said, while seeking to defend his failure to get the panel notified by the Council.
However, when the media sought for a categorical reply from the Chief Officer whether there’s any   official traffic and road safety committee notified by the Council, Tawde admitted that there’s no  statutory committee till date though members were inducted on the panel a year ago.   MCM was in the news recently when the Civic body was caught napping on the Traffic department’s proposal to introduce pay parking in the commercial capital for two-wheelers.

The civic body had also come under the scanner as a proposal from the district Collectorate to repair the defunct CCTV surveillance camera is lying unattended at the Municipality.
