However, Panaji police are yet to register an offence and the incident has merely found a mention as a motor vehicle accident in the records. As per sources, the accident occurred at 5.30 am at the crossroads junction near Azad Maidan and Cafe Real in Panaji.
A car travelling at a high speed rammed into the left rear side of the police bus, which was headed towards Altinho from the Police Headquarters to pick up personnel to be taken to Maulinguem, Bicholim, for a firing drill.
Based on a broken number plate found on the scene, the car was identified to be a Wagon R. Police constable Atmaram Gauns claimed he lost control of the vehicle after the impact. The police bus zigzagged its way towards the Cafe Bhosale lane damaging six two-wheelers and a cycle parked along the 20-metre narrow stretch of road.
Residents in the vicinity were woken up by the loud crash as the roof tiles came crashing down when the police bus hit the verandah roof and poles of an old building along the lane. The police bus finally came to a screeching halt near Hotel Annapurna. Such was the impact that the two motorcycles and a cycle were dragged under the bus for some distance.
Of the six two-wheelers, four belonged to one family, which has demanded strictest of actions against the wrong doers. However, an offence is yet to be registered.
