Weekend without power? Saturday is a day when several parts of Goa will be without power, courtesy shutdowns arranged by the power department.
Separate notices issued by the power department have indicated that Mormugao, Canacona, Sanguem and Quepem talukas and many parts of Salcete taluka are to be the worst affected with day-long planned power outages. With the Selaulim water treatment plant among the areas affected by the power outages water supply would also be restricted to much of South Goa.
A planned shutdown at all substations in Mormugao taluka will leave people without power supply from 9 am to 5 pm in Vasco, Harbour, Sancoale, Chicalim, Cortalim, Cansaulim, Velsao, Nuvem, Majorda-Utorda-Calata, Verna, Nagoa and the Verna industrial estate.
Similarly in Margao, the shutdown will be from 9 am to 2pm on Saturday at the Aquem and Monte Hill substation affecting the entire Margao city besides surrounding areas like Pajifond, Comba, New Market, Gandhi Market, Motidongor, Aquem, Tolleaband, Vidhyanagar, Tarsanzor, Malbhat, Pedda, Khareband, Colmorod, Calconda, Sirvodem, Housing Board, Rumdamol, Davorlim and Zariwaddo.
Canacona, Sanguem and Quepem talukas as well as many parts of Salcete taluka do not fare much better either. A planned shutdown at the substation at Xeldem from 9am to 5pm will keep the areas like Canacona, Rivona, Sanguem, Xelpem, Cuncolim, Quepem, Assolda, Xeldem, Sanvordem, Benaulim, Velim, Carmona, Verna Industrial Estate, Nessai, Shigao, Curchorem, Poinguinim without power.
In North Goa, a shutdown has been planned at Taleigao on Saturday between 9 am and 2:30pm and also at Nagargao in Satari between 9 am and 2pm. Siolim and surrounding villages in Bardez will see a shutdown between 9am and 3pm
In Durbhat in Ponda, the shutdown will begin at 7:15am and end by 12:15pm.
“The entire area of Sanguem and Quepem talukas will have restricted water supply on April 29. There will be annual maintenance work by electricity department on Saturday. Due to power shut down, the water pumps will not be functional. Although we may get power supply from Ponda, the power will only be sufficient to run smaller capacity water pumps which will be not enough,” Sanguem PWD Executive Engineer Anant Gaonkar said. adding that “Water supply will resume on Saturday evening only after power supply is restored.”
