Margao Municipal Council’s plan to engage labourers for pre-monsoon works in the city has run into rough weather with the municipal administration raising objections to carry out the work by inviting quotations when the entire work is estimated to cost Rs 14 lakh.

Given the situation, the civic body has now resolved to knock on the doors of the Director of Municipal Administration seeking advice and guidance on how to go about the work. Though around four contractors had participated in the quotations, the process has now been kept on hold after the municipal accountant put up a clear note stating that the civic body cannot
engage labourers by inviting quotations.
In fact, the accountant is believed to have categorically stated that if there were no takers for the Rs 14 lakh tender floated by the civic body to engage labourers for pre-monsoon works, the municipality should approach the labour contract society to engage labourers for the work.
An upset Chairperson Babita Prabhudesai told The Goan that the civic body was forced to invite quotations since there were no takers for the Rs 14 lakh tender. “We had no option other than to invite the quotations to engage the labourers. If the accountant or the municipal administrator has raised some queries, let the DMA guide the civic body how to go about the work,” she added.
The municipality has indeed found itself in a quandary since the civic body could neither get the labourers via a tender nor could move ahead with the quotations.
