Gold worth `34.73 lakh seized at Dabolim airport

The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the Customs attached to Dabolim International Airport seized 11 gold biscuits worth Rs 34.73 lakh in unclaimed baggage on Friday.

According to AIU officials, the officers found a packet wrapped with black adhesive tape containing 11 gold biscuits of 10 tolas each weighing 1,280 grammes under a passenger’s seat of the Air India Flight AI-994.   
The AIU officials informed that when they tried to inquire about the owner of the packet, no one came forward to claim the packet.   
The officials said the gold amounting to Rs 34.73 lakh has been seized and liable for confiscation under the provision of Sections 110 and 111 of the Customs Act and they are further investigating the case.   
The customs officials added that this is the seventh seizure by AIU team of Goa customs in April.   
The officials said the AIU of Goa Customs had seized gold from aircraft AI 994 on April 23 and the seized gold of 230 grammes was valued at Rs 8.68 lakh.   
During April, the AIU team of Goa Customs under the supervision of Commissioner of Customs seized gold total weighing 2.4 kgs, valued at Rs 66.24 lakh and foreign and Indian currencies equivalent to Indian 
Rs 40.26 lakh, informed the official.
