Instead of adopting the route of tendering the work, GSIDC has decided to award the contract to the winner of the competition for the best design. In the hope of attracting creative minds and artists to carry out the delicate task, GSIDC has communicated the details of the competition to the principal of College of Fine Arts, Altinho, the directorate of art and culture and the commissioner of Corporation of City of Panaji.
Along with the financial proposal, artists have been called upon to submit 3-dimensional China mosaic tile artwork of 2 ft by 2 ft depicting a Goan bird, which is the theme for the competition.
Each artwork will have approximately 50 shades comprising 6 mm ceramic tiles, which will be custom made from established tile manufacturing firms. Artists have been asked to incorporate shades of brown, green, blue, white to grey and red in their sample pieces.
The design will be submitted on paper in actual size that is to be drawn on the bridge walls and is also expected to be coloured in the exact style in which mosaics will finally be done.
Upon being awarded the work, the artist will have two months to execute the work on the bridge walls.
As per the application form available on GSIDC website, mosaic mesh is to be used to create all the mosaic at the workshop. The tiles are broken into smaller pieces called ‘tesserae’ and juxtaposed to create the design on the mesh. Once the whole design is executed on the mesh, the pieces will be taken to the site for installation using tile adhesive. After the installation, the mosaic tiles will be cured for two days before beginning the last stage called ‘grouting’, whereby all the gaps between the tiles will be filled up.
Application forms will be available till May 3 and have to be submitted for scrutiny by May 10.
