Goa coach Severino Fernandes is keen on adopting a cautious approach ahead of their 51st Junior Under 19 National Football Championships for Dr B C Roy Trophy (Tier 1) campaign in Bilaspur, Chattisgarh from April 26 to May 5. The squad leaves on Tuesday.
“I am a bit cautious. The team comprises of some talented players. I am sure they will give their best but it’s too early to make any prediction,” Fernandes said on Saturday. Goa have been clubbed with Tamil Nadu, IFA,West Bengal and Assam in Group D.
“It’s not going to be easy as all the teams are looking forward to a better show this time around. Some of our opponents are known, while some are unknown. It’s going to be a very tough tournament,” Fernandes added.  “We’ve had a fair trial and the players performed well. I’m sure they will be keen to prove themselves. The clubs have refused to release the players because of the I-League under 18 and the ongoing First Division League. But it’s not the same with some other states. IFA West Bengal and Tamil Nadu have a strong side.
“I’m keeping fingers crossed. There’s no time to relax. I’m sure we will be able to do justice to our talent this time,” the coach said, adding: “The onus will be on the players. They have worked hard during practice in the past few days. With some luck, they will produce good results. We know no match will be easy and we are ready for the challenge.”  Asked which of the teams would be hard to beat, Fernandes replied, IFA West Bengal and Tamil Nadu are going to be tough. “Other teams are also well balanced, so we need to do our best.”
Fernandes remains focused on his goal to help Goa to dish out good performances and qualify for the next stage. Goa begin their campaign against Assam on April 27 and the Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim coach  spoke on the strength of the opposition that Goa will face in the tournament. Goa will next meet Tamil Nadu and wind up their engagement against IFA West Bengal on May 1.
