Sopte felicitated at Mandrem
PERNEM: Mandrem MLA Dayanand Sopte, who defeated former chief minister Laxmikant Parsekar in the recent assembly election, was felicitated on Sunday.   
Sopte was felicitated at a function organised at Mandrem High School ground. Opposition Leader Chandrakant (Babu) Kavlekar, Pratapsing Rane, Digambar Kamat, Ravi Naik, Luizinho Faleiro, Jennifer Monseratte, Reginaldo Lourenco, former union minister Ramakant Khalap and journalist Shriram Pachindre were present.   
Speaking on the occasion, Khalap said Sopte created history by defeating the chief minister and urged him to keep the tradition of victory in the elections.   
“As MLA, I will not sit in my office. During election, I reached every one’s house and now I will again come to your houses to know your grievances and try to solve it. I will always raise my voice to give justice to Mundkars and tenements,” assured Sopte.   


Quepem Bazaar road tarred again   
CURCHOREM: Opposition Leader and Quepem MLA Chandrakant (Babu) Kavlekar on Thursday launched the Rs 90 lakh re-tarring work of the Quepem Bazaar road near the municipal garden.   
It may be recalled that the Quepem Bazaar road was tarred on June 3, 2016, but the tar was washed away barely four days later following heavy rains. Some angry locals had confronted the PWD (roads) engineer over the bad quality of work and had also resorted to a road blockade.   
 Kavlekar launched the works in the presence of Quepem Municipal councillors and PWD officials.   
“I took up this project first as many locals had criticized me when the newly-tarred road from Quepem Bazaar was washed away in the rains last year. It was not my fault, but it was my duty to complete the development work,” he added.  

Cleanliness drive 
begins at St Andre  
AGASSAIM: St Andre MLA Francis Silveira launched a cleanliness drive in the constituency on the eve of Saints procession at Goa Velha.   
Speaking to The Goan, Silveira said people had complained that garbage had accumulated along the roadsides.   
“As the Saints procession is a major celebration in Goa Velha, I started to get rid of the garbage. Locals are giving me good cooperation. The cleanliness drive will be undertaken in entire St Andre constituency,” Silveira said. People have expressed satisfaction for his initiative to take up the cleanliness drive.  

Gaude promises 
employment  
PONDA: Priol MLA and Minister for Art and Culture Govind Gaude has  stated that he would try to see that no youth from his constituency is  deprived of employment.  
Gaude was felicitated by villagers of Karamane-Priol on Sunday  evening. Former speaker Adv Vishwas Satarkar and local BJP leaders and  workers were present on the occasion.  
Gaude was felicitated by senior citizen, Bhudo Gawade.  
Gaude assured to provide basic facilities in the constituency. “I am  committed towards providing basic facilities. There will be good road  connectivity in coming days,” he said.  
“I have some concepts to tackle the unemployment issue. I will take  care to see that no youth from this constituency is deprived of  employment,” Gaude said.      

Hundreds throng for Pethichi Zatra    
BICHOLIM: The famous Pethichi Zatra of Mulgao was celebrated with the participation of hundreds of devotees including Dhonds and Chowgules.   
‘Pethichi Zatra’ means arrival of Goddess Kelbai from Mulgao to Mayem village. As per tradition, Goddess Kelbai from Mulgao goes to meet her elder sister Mhamai from Mayem village by sitting in a peth (a wooden decorated rectangular box).   
The ‘Peth’ left from Mulgao at about 2.15 am and made a halt at Wadakade-Bordem to bless the people in the form of kaul (flowers). Then it proceeded through Bhailipeth, Sonar Peth and stopped near Hira Talkies Tisk, where hundreds of devotees were present.     

Health camp held 
in Mapusa  
MAPUSA: At least 50 senior citizens took the benefit of a free health check-up camp at Priti Bhojan Hall, Hanuman Natyagraha, Mapusa on March 31.   
In the camp, routine health parameters such as blood pressure, blood sugar level, weight, etc, were checked and free medicines were provided to some persons.   
The camp was jointly organized by the Mapusa Urban Health Centre and Ward 10 Councillor Tushar Tople. Dr Prasad Borkar and Dr Shilpa Tople conducted the camp.  


Cancona celebrates Padwa with gaiety  
CANACONA: Gudi Padwa was celebrated with religious fervour in Canacona on Tuesday.   
Hundreds of residents participated in Surya Namaskar and other related activities organized at Shri Gaitonde Grounds, Chaudi, to observe Gudi Padwa. Women dressed in special traditional attire lined up to welcome the sunrise to mark the first day of the Chaitra month of the Hindu calendar.
