Absence of zebra crossing indicators on major junctions in Mapusa may pour cold water on plans of Goa traffic police to ensure pedestrians right of way on Goan roads.
While most of the roads in Mapusa were battered due to the ongoing sewerage works, those roads that were restored are yet to get fresh coat of paint on the zebra crossing.
Mapusa Municipal Council has failed to paint the
zebra crossings at major junctions despite receiving several request letters from the
traffic police.
Some of the key pedestrian crossings in Mapusa are opposite the PWD office and court junction. Besides these two, the traffic police had suggested painting of pedestrian crossings at Sirsat building, gate of Dnyanprasarak school, opposite government complex, North Goa Zonal education office, in front of Vision Hospital, in front of Galaxy Hospital and near Agnel Institute of Technology.
MMC Chairperson Sandip Falari acknowledged receiving requests from the traffic police on zebra crossings, but was helpless in undertaking the job.
“On several occasions, we tendered the painting works of these roads but no agency comes forward to undertake the jobs because of less quantity of works,” Falari said.
Mapusa Traffic PI Tushar Vernekar said his men will be posted near the court junction to create awareness on people’s right of way among the public and motorists.
Goa Traffic Police had announced a special drive beginning from March 29 at major junctions with zebra crossings identified in five major towns across the State, including Mapusa.
