A Goan-born veterinary doctor from Moira, Ellette Da Gama currently pursuing her post graduation in surgery in Kerala is part of the team treating a baby elephant which was rescued after being attacked by a tiger. The baby elephant had claw marks and deep gnashes all over its body.
“On Friday evening the Kerala forest department rescued the baby elephant near the university where we study. There were claw marks, deep gnashes and bite marks on the body and it was clear that the calf’s family had abandoned him,” Ellette said.
Since Friday, Ellette and her team have been working on treating the baby elephant with antibiotics and regular dressings of the wounds to pull it out of the jaws of certain death. The team’s main aim now is to bring down the infection with antibiotics. The calf was severely dehydrated when it was found by the forest officials in Kerala.
Ellette who graduated from Bombay University is pursuing her studies in Kerala. “At the university in Kerala, we get to work on a lot of cases of animals as compared to Bombay University. The Forest Department here bring many cases of injured animals to us for treatment,” said Ellette. Though studying in Kerala, Ellette also hopes to return to Goa someday to work in the field in her own state some day.
