A total of 346 candidates have filed nominations for the upcoming elections to be held on February 4. Of these, the constituency of St Cruz received the highest nominations with a total of 16 candidates standing for a chance to be elected members of the legislative assembly.

Wednesday being the last day of nominations, the Chief Electoral Office (CEO) received a total of 211 nominations, bringing the total count to 405. The 405 nominations include multiple nominations by candidates. Each candidate is allowed to file a maximum of four nominations each.

With Babush Monseratte vying for the Panaji seat, the constituency he had won in 2012, St Cruz was up for grabs by someone new. Banking on this development, a total of 16 candidates have filed nominations for the constituency. These include Victoria Fernandes and son Rudolf contesting as independents, while BJP’s Hemant Golatkar, AAP’s Jose Gomes, NCP’s Shakil Sheik and Congress’s Antonio Fernandes are also in the running.

Cortalim, with 15 candidates filing nominations saw most nominations being filed on Wednesday, a total of 11. These include MGP’s Suman Sharma, Ramakant Borkar, Govind Naik and additional nominations by Alina Saldanha.

St Andre also proved to be a hot ticket with sitting BJP MLA Vishnu Wagh not being able to contest owing to ill health. His brother, Ramarao Wagh is one among the 13 candidates that have filed nominations. Others include MGP’s Shilpa Bhobe, NCP’s Dattaram Chari, AAP’s Rama Kanconkar and INC’s Francisco Silveira.

Now that the last day for nominations is over, each constituency’s Returning Officer and the CEO will spend the next two days scrutinizing the nominations filed.
