Thirty-five prisoners, who are undergoing life imprisonment inside the Hindalga Central Prison will be set free this Republic Day under pretext of good behaviour.

Based on their good conduct, the state prison authorities have decided to free them on the occasion of the Republic Day.

Leading a condemned life after spending many years in the prison, these prisoners will be also facing economical and social problems and in order to help them, the authorities will be also issuing them ration cards based on their family economical status and also the Aadhaar cards while they would be released on January 26.

The State Prison Authority had sent a proposal to Governor Vajubhai Wala recommending release of 188 prisoners in the state including the 35 from Belagavi prison. Thus, these 35 are among those 188 prisoners to be released from various prisons in the state.

“In case these prisoners intend to start self-employment after their release, they would also be helped by the government as the authorities would stand as guarantor for the loan they take from the co-operative societies,” prison superintendent T P Shesha said adding that cards for these prisoners among others in the prison are also ready.

During their stay in prison, they are trained in tailoring, agriculture, bakery, carpeting, printing press, carpentry, soap making, etc. The prisoners were given the work based on their interest and doing the work for long time they have become expert in the work.

Authorities expect that most of them would start their own business once they are freed. NGOs and social organisations visiting the prison have observed the articles prepared and manufactured by the prisoners and have agreed to give them the work after the release, authorities said.

As financial institutions refuse to give loan to the released prisoners and people to stand as guarantors for the loan, the jail authorities would stand as guarantors for the loan which would take ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 1.5 lakh, prison officials said.
