Stating that BJP has allotted party tickets only to those candidates capable of winning the elections, Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar said the party respected the feelings of Speaker Anant Shet and assured that he would be given due position in the party.

He was addressing a public meeting of BJP's Mayem constituency at Hirabai Zantye Memorial Hall, Bicholim. The meeting was convened to announce Pravin Zantye as BJP’s Mayem candidate for the assembly poll. Deputy Chief Minister Francis D’Souza, Sakhali MLA Dr Pramod Sawant, North Goa ZP president Ankita Navelkar, BJP State president Vinay Tendulkar, general secretary Sadanand Shet Tanawade, Premanand Mhambrey, sarpanchas and panchas from Mayem constituency were present.

Speaking further, Parsekar said ticket allotment to any person was the party’s decision and one should not take it for granted that he would be given the ticket.

“The party has given the ticket to Pravin Zantye after knowing that he has the winning capacity. Similarly, we also respect the feelings of Speaker Anant Shet, who would be given due position in the party and there should not be any argument with regard to allotment of ticket,” stated Parsekar.

More than just mobilising support to its BJP candidate Pravin Zantye, the BJP leadership was clearly in damage control mode after having denied the party ticket to its sitting MLA and Speaker Anant Shet.

The move to appease Shet was also aimed at arresting a major rebellion within party workers in Mayem constituency, as they were persuading Shet to contest as an independent candidate.

Deputy Chief Minister D’Souza said BJP wants the full term for next five years to continue the ongoing development works and it does not wants the play of musical chairs like the Congress party.

Vinay Tendulkar said BJP has fulfilled about 90% of the assurances given in the agenda besides executing different schemes to the people. “Hence, the party has the right to demand votes from people. The party has capacity to win atleast 26 seats,” said Tendulkar.

Dr Sawant and others also spoke at the meeting.

On the occasion, Zantye was welcomed by BJP State president Tendulkar in the presence of other leaders.

In his speech, Zantye assured to work for the poor and downtrodden segments like his father Harish Zantye.
