Why do more than 5,000 youth leave Goa every year in search of jobs? That means the casino model is failing and we need to change that. You have to restructure the entire tourism business in Goa. Casino culture brings comes black money, drugs, prostitution, etc, which brings only certain type of people to Goa."

Opposing the perception that banning casinos can ruin Goa’s economy, Delhi’s Tourism Minister, Kapil Mishra on Sunday said a well-intended and honest government can run the entire country’s economy on Goa’s tourism.

For that to happen, he said that whole perspective of Goa’s tourism will have to be changed and the focus should revolve on what Goa has to offer on Goa’s culture and natural beauty.

“If we can have a well-intended and honest government, Goa alone can run the entire country’s economy only on tourism,” Mishra said.

“But for that, you will have to change the perspective of tourism. You have to change the focus on Goa’s culture, natural beauty, how they celebrate their day-to-day life. If you can bring the focus on that, Goa alone can run the entire Indian economy,” he added.

Mishra was speaking to journalists after a meeting in Cunchelim, Mapusa, on Sunday. Mapusa AAP candidate, Shraddha Khalap was also present.

He said with casinos comes black money, drugs, prostitution, etc, which brings only certain type of people to Goa.

“Why do more than 5,000 youth leave Goa every year in search of jobs? That means the casino model is failing and we need to change that. You have to restructure the entire tourism business in Goa,” he said.

Mishra, who is also the Water Supply Minister of Delhi, said BJP and Congress don’t understand economics and therefore will never be able to provide 20,000 litres of free water as promised by AAP in Goa.

“We have implemented this promise within 15 days after forming the government in Delhi. More than one and half year has already passed and I can proudly say that after giving free water, we have earned Rs 178 crore extra revenue for the Delhi Jal Board. Now, economic experts are studying our model,” a beaming Mishra said.

He further said by providing free water, the government also saved water as people have stopped wasting water as when they cross 20,000 litres they will have to pay.

“We also believe that water is a basic right. Government has responsibility to provide quality drinking water,” he said.

He also said drug problem in Punjab and Goa was similar. He said Punjab government and the entire system worked hand in hand with the drug mafia.

“In Goa too, drug mafia cannot run without the involvement of the political establishment. If your chief minister does not want it, it cannot happen. And if it happens despite they not wanting it then that means you have a very weak chief minister,” Mishra said.

‘CM like Elvis Gomes can deliver special status to Goa’

“How can a chief minister who cannot save his own status give special status to Goa? How can they fight for Goa’s right?” he asked.

“Recently, the chief minister was trying to seek attention of Prime Minister, Narendra Modi and he was completely ignored,” he said referring to a video that went viral on social media.

He said Goa needed a chief minister of a pedigree of Elvis Gomes to deliver special status to the State.

“We need someone like Elvis Gomes. Someone who’s honest, upright and who can stand for people’s right. Someone who can look in the eyes of the prime minister and demand the rights and special status for Goa and get it done,” he said.
