Addressing a press conference, Gupta said that in the tradition of the party, the names would be drawn up through a time tested democratic process within the party involving recommendations, screening and finally the selection by the party’s Political Affairs Committee (PAC), which will have the final say. The process is expected to begin by the final week of August and end around three weeks later and will involve all 40 constituencies.
“In each constituency there will be a meeting of active volunteers who will recommend names for that assembly constituency. There will be no voting. Any one or more volunteers will recommend names. Those whose names are recommended will be invited to fill up the form,” Gupta said.
“Anyone can be eligible for an AAP ticket, even if on that date, he is not a member of the party,” he said.
“Out of say 20 persons whose names are recommended, only about 12 may end up filling the form,” Gupta said.
The names of those who fill up forms will then be sent to the state-level screening committee which will check the person’s background, make sure he’s not corrupt, a criminal or communal and then send around three to five names per constituency to the central PAC.
“The National PAC will have two special invitees from Goa when the lists are discussed and the PAC will finally decide the candidate out of the list,” Gupta said.
He added that even after the name is finalised, if it is brought to their notice that the person has a dubious background, they will drop the candidate. “We would prefer not to contest that seat than field a dubious candidate,” Gupta said.
Gupta also warned that the prospective candidates should not fall prey to those, even if they are from within the party, who are demanding money from prospective candidates in exchange
for tickets.
