Not GPCC, I’ll decide candidates in five constituencies: Vishwajit

In a move that could further drive a wedge in the already rebellion-hit Congress party just before the ensuing Assembly elections in the State, Valpoi MLA Vishwajit Rane has said he will be the final authority to take a call on candidates in 5 constituencies.

Claiming to have direct contact with All India Congress Committee (AICC) chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Vishwajit said, “I will decide the candidates in Mayem, Bicholim, Sakhali, Poriem and Valpoi constituencies. My decision will be final and nobody can challenge it”.
In a veiled attack on Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president Luizinho Faleiro, Vishwajit said the names proposed by GPCC will not be considered. “I will not pay heed to any names finalised by the GPCC in Mayem, Bicholim, Sakhali, Poriem and Valpoi. It doesn’t matter, my decision will be final and binding on the party”.
Setting the ball rolling, the Valpoi MLA extended his support to industrialist Pravin Zantye to contest as the Congress candidate from Mayem constituency. He also said MLA Naresh Sawal would be the ideal candidate in Bicholim for the forthcoming Assembly polls.
Speaking at a meeting at Shirodkar hall, Bicholim on Sunday, Vishwajit said his dream was to see his father Pratapsingh Rane as the next chief minister of Goa.
Pravin Zantye, senior Congressman Jaidev Gaonkar, Atchut Gaonkar, Rayu Sawant, Fondu Sawant and others also attended the meeting.
