Mount Mary's High School, Chinchinim stunned Fr Agnel Multipurpose Higher Secondary School, Verna 3-1 to storm into the semi-final of Salcete Taluka Under 17 Subroto Mukherjee inter-school football tournament organised by Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs at Government School Playground, Cuncolim on Tuesday.
Mount Mary's High School dominated the game from the word go and never allowed their opponents to strike rhythm inisde their teritorry. Akshay Konkre broke the deadlock in the early moments of the game when he slotted past the rival goalkeeper with a snap shot. Spurrred by the early sucesss, Mount Mary's High School, intensfied their attack and pushed their opponents on the back foot. Denzil Fernandes doubled the lead when he punished the rival goalkeeper with a clincial finish.
At the other end, Fr Agnel Multipurpose Higher Secondary did not strike the right cord and failed to exert pressure on the rival goal.
Crossing over, Mount Mary's High School continued to enjoy the better share of exchanges and soon after resumption, Preston Fernandes put the issue beyond doubt when he beat his marker and punted the ball to the far corner of the net.
In the final 10 minutes, Fr Agnel Multipurpose Higher Secondary went all out and managed to reduce the deficit through the boots of Kevin Almeida.
Stendly Fernandes, the prolific striker scored twice to help holders Rosary Higher Secondary School, Navelim register a 3-0 win over Fr Basilio Andrade Higher Secondary School, Majorda after leading 2-0 at half time.
Stendly Fernandes provided the breakthrough. Receiving a long ball from his teammate on the left flank, he sidestepped another defender before scoring with a quality low shot at the near post.
Buoyed by that lead, Rosary Higher Secondary School upped the ante and Ronaldo Coelho scored the insurance goal midway in the first half.
Post resumption, Rosary Higher Secondary School continued to dictate terms and kept up the pressure and Stendly Fernandes struck a second time to complete his brace.At the other end, Fr Basilio Andrade HSS' resistance faltered and defending champions sealed the issue in style.
Gaunkar Higher Secondary,Raia edged past St Alex Higher Secondary School, Curtorim 2-1. Both the teams were tied 1-1 at half time and displayed attacking flair.Sanroy Colaco and Romario Da Costa were the goal-getters while Liston D'Costa reduced the margin.
Bethany Convent High School, Sao Jose de Areal blanked Government Multipurpose Higher Secondary, Borda 2-0. Mark Carvalho was the hero of the day as he scored a brace.
